Having organized stations is a sure-fire way to be successful during the school year. My notebook stations are the same as my lab stations so the students know which station to go to when it’s time to work on their notebooks.
My classroom was set up around a Marine theme so my lab stations included the: Sea Turtle Station, Shark Station, Jellyfish Station, Dolphin Station, Stingray Station and Whale Station. Each station has their own Science Interactive Notebook Bin labeled with their group animal, so it’s easy to know which bin to bring back to their table.
Here are some basics to always have in the bin. I would assign a group member to Group Supplies, so when something gets low, they are to let you know.

ReplyDeleteI am LOVING your ISN!!!! Thank you so VERY much for putting them together, they are much better than many ideas I have used before and I am actually going to use them to help my tutees get organized and caught up (I am not teaching at a school right now). Here is my question: I bought the Physical Science one while I was teaching it and I have been (VERY IM)patiently for the full Biology one...Are you close to finishing it? If that's the case, are you going to offer any "complete your book" offers for teachers like me that have been buying the units as you have posted them?
ReplyDeleteI am tempted to buy the Bio ones tonight and start working on it right away so I can have a model ready for my tutee on Sat but...I saw TpT posted a teaser about the sale. Is it going to be worth waiting two days or the discount offered will be minimal?
Thanks!
Elisa
Please keep your blog active. I sense you have a lot of great ideas and there are teachers like me who need the boost this time of year! I am planning to buy the entire physical science set on TpT, and I'd love to continue to hear about being a better physical science teacher. I feel I am boring my poor students to death the last few weeks! I need to add more variety and more creativity into my classes. Thanks for what you have already offered to us!
ReplyDeleteThanks for believing in me Barbara!! I'm going to be focusing a lot more on this blog - if you need any ideas for a particular topic in Physical Science feel free to let me know...would love ideas for kicking this blog off that would benefit readers :)
DeleteI am so glad I found you and your Matter section of Science Interactive Notebooks. My students need these lessons to really get a good grasp on the matter concepts. Thank you so much!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you found me too! If you ever have any student work you would like to share - I would love to see it! Thanks for all your support!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the information you have provided thus far. I am purchasing your Physical Science bundle. I do have a couple of questions. Please forgive me if you answered these in a previous post. Would shrinking pages via the copy machine be the best way to use your bundle in a composition notebook? Would this shrinkage mess up the foldables, etc that I see in your examples? With your spirals, how do you keep the spiral wire from snagging and catching on everything? Do you have problems with the covers coming off after a while? Thanks in advance.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, thank you for supporting Nitty Gritty Science! In regards to using a composition notebook, I would agree that shrinking the pages would be the best option for most of the activities. However, I would also like to say that composition notebooks do not have bindings that are equipped for adding volume to a notebook which is going to happen when creating an interactive notebook,. So, that is one of the reasons I push for a spiral notebook. The other reason I ask students to get a 5 subject, college ruled is for space - there is a lot of content to cover in a year and a 5 subject is large enough to keep student's work all in one place. About covers tearing off and such, I tell my students to pick up 5 subject notebooks that have sturdy, plastic covers such as the brand 5 star.
ReplyDeleteI think you will be surprised at how neat and protected the students keep their notebooks once they start on them. Notes are colorful (which they love), they always earn stickers upon completing an activity (which they love more than using colored pens) and many of the activities allow them to be creative, so they have a personal stake in this notebook which they are proud of.
Please let me know if you have any other questions or comments - I'm always happy to help!
Take care,
Erica
I use composition books for my science notebooks. I want to purchase your physical science bundle but it looks like it is sized for spiral notebooks. Can you please confirm?
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jill
